Dr. Harris Stratyner

Dr. Harris B. Stratyner is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and former Division Director of Addiction Recovery Services at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is currently Regional Clinical Vice President of Caron New York Recovery Services, and a Vice Chairperson of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Dr. Stratyner was the first Ph.D. appointed Division Director of Chemical Dependency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Westchester, and was also an Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at that same institution, where he founded The Retreat at Westchester, a world renowned addiction program.

Dr. Stratyner received his Masters Degree in Psychology from Long Island University where he served as the teaching/research assistant to Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, Distinguished Professor of Social Psychology. Upon receiving his M.A., Dr. Stratyner received the Gold Medal for Excellence in his major field of study. He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Seton Hall University with distinction, and is a licensed New York State Doctor of Psychology.

In addition to his earned Doctorate, he was also awarded an honorary Doctorate in 2005 from Mercy College for his work on developing his theory of “Carefrontation.” A nationally recognized expert on co-occurring disorders, Dr. Stratyner has written extensively on his model of motivational treatment with mentally ill and addicted individuals, has hosted his own weekly radio show “Here’s to Your Good Health,” for over 22 years on AM 1230, WFAS, which is not just on health, but also features jazz artists, including Dr. Stratyner's Godfather, Dizzy Gillespie. In 1999, he received a Proclamation from the Westchester County Executive for 10 years of broadcasting.

Harris, has been interviewed by  the "New York Times," "Daily News," various national magazines, such as " Self," and "People," as well as national television shows on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, as well as public television, including the Moyer's Series on Addiction which also included his speaking at the United Nations.

He writes his own blog for "Psychology Today Magazines website," and has been quoted by many other bloggers including, "The Daily Beast."  His latest publication was a collaboration as co-author of the book "Pediatric and Adolescent Mental Health," (Thomson/ Reuters, 2009).

He loves his listeners and feels that after all these years they are part of his extended family.
